Alt Tags  (Mike Y note) are descriptive words for images and other items that cannot be read by search engines such as Google.  Remember a picture is worth 1,000 words!  Adults are more attracted to pictures than words.  Out attention spans are minimal when reading long dissertations.  If you have a product than is best described with a photo, make sure you include an “Alt=” parameter to describe it.

Backlinks (according to Wikipedia):  “are incoming links to a Website or web page. In the search engine optimization (SEO) world, the number of backlinks is one indication of the popularity or importance of that Website or page (though other measures, such as PageRank, are likely to be more important).”

Mike Y notes:  I think backlinks are a very important means to drive traffic to your Website and also have an ultimate bearing on your PageRank.  There is, however, a weighting favouring “follow” (or “do-follow”) backlinks as versus “no-follow” backlinks.  There is really more than I care to know about the subject.  I think enough no-follow links add up to the weight of a follow link.

Hyperlinks (or links for short) (according to Wikipedia):  “are a word or several words in a document whose function is to direct e.g. a web browser to the address (local or remote) they link to when clicked on.”

Mike Y notes:   This is your navigation tool to guide people both inside and outside of your Website.  In addition to the words, hyperlinks can be larger sized pictures of images, and pictures or other graphics (also known as banner ads)  can act as hyperlinks when a “hotspot” is insert around them.

Links  (see Hyperlinks and Backlinks)

PageRank (according to Wikipedia):  “is a link analysis algorithm used by the Google Internet search engine that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set.

Mike Y notes:   Page Rank is important.  But driving traffic to your Website is more important.  The traffic is your customers or potential customers.

Search engine optimization, or SEO (according to Wikipedia):  “is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.

Mike Y notes:   Make sure you learn about Search Engine Optimization.  This is the tool that allows Google and other browsers to evaluate your site and directs people to visit you when they search for keywords.  This is also generally referred to as “On-Site” optimization as versus “Off-Site” which refers to your advertising and marketing techniques to drive traffic to your site via backlinks.

Sitemap (HTML) (Mike Y note) is a list of pages on your site that visitors can see.  It is meant to provide information as to where certain pages or topics are located.  Internal, or site, links can be used to send the visitors to those respective pages and aid visitors in navigating your site.

Sitemap (XML) (Mike Y note) is a list of pages on your Website.  It is easiest way to give Google, and other search engines, information about your site and may speed up Google’s crawlers finding you.  There are many advantages of submitting a Sitemap to Google, especially if your site is new and doesn’t have many backlinks.

Title Element better explained on Titles and Metas page.
