Did you know you can place and receive free phone calls to any U.S. landline or mobile phone number in Gmail now? And rumor has it that calling anywhere in the United States will remain free at least though year’s end. You need voice and video chat installed (see previous blog article). Then sign in to your Gmail account
Just click the Call phone link at the top of your Chat roster to open up the Call window. A digital pad opens up and place the call as you would over a normal line. Believe me, it works. You need a microphone but can use the computer’s speakers if you do not have a headset.
You can also view your call history or add credit if you’d like to place an international call from the Call window. Additionally, if you are a Google Voice user, you can enable Google Chat as a forwarding phone and receive calls in Gmail.
