This is the a series of planned articles on niche marketing. Here I will discuss Niche marketing as a great opportunity for self employed small business people to expand their impact on the Web. Following this post I plan to share my views on the need to consider a proper business mind set as well as the opportunity to make money. The series will also talk about agility being a factor in determining your success. I will conclude with how Search Engine Optimization fits into this plan.
If people have any interest in a subject and talk about it, there are people Googling it! These interests and topics create niches and a niche is a focal point. It provides purpose and identity and consumes your every thought. A small business Web site without a niche is like a basketball team without a leader, someone to control the tempo of the game .
Niche Marketing Is Much Easier
A defined, narrow niche also makes your decisions easier. It allows you to constantly ask yourself rather than wasting your time: Does this action benefit me or not? This helps your decision making analysis and is quite the opposite of attempting to be all things to all people and shotgunning your marketing efforts. If your target is blurred, your focus will be blurred.
Google is converting the Library of Congress, as well as every other source of information in the world, into a treasure chest. It categorizes and ranks information in order to help solve people’s quest for answers to their problems. It makes me feel like I am back in my favorite toy store – anything related to making me faster and better on the computer (It used to be a Home Depot, but no longer.) and the Web.
Affordable high speed Internet access paved a rut filled dirt road and turned it into a high speed super highway. This makes time consuming searches and downloads (yes, I remember dial up and 286’s) a thing of the past. Smart phones, Ipads and apps are feeding our eternal quest for instant gratification.
A Small Business Opportunity
With these combined factors self employed small business owners have an opportunity to control their destiny. Google help kill some big mass marketing industries or forced them to morph. Examples are newspapers, television, book stores, universities and colleges. The list goes on.
In doing so, Google opened up a large niche or target market industry by bringing information to your prospects’ finger tips and their computers monitor. Your reach suddenly extended beyond the neighborhood and now encompasses the entire world!
Prospects are eager to find what you offer as long as they are interested in that topic and you provide them with interesting and credible information, products or services. Whether that be wine making, sewing, bar tending, horsemanship, duck hunting or whatever. Attract enough people with good information and you can sell products or services, yours or someone else’s.
But first, focus on a niche market. That must be some place where you excel above the competition so you can differentiate yourself.
Assessing your business model is my next planned topic in the category of niche marketing.
