I follow Dr. Ralph Wilson of “Web Marketing Today” and have been for a while. His site link has been on my DIY WEB Marketing page for some time as recommended. This YouTube video came today in his newsletter update. It is a little intense for newcomers and do it yourselfers, but still worth a view.
In the video Dr. Wilson interviews John Marshall who is obviously heavily into analytics. Marshall professes that most progress reports and measures of success in today’s age are now wrong based on flawed measurements. He discusses the impact of localized markets as well as personalization of results based on your own cookies. The results are subtle to the untrained eye, just as the “ad” or “sponsored” results are.
Michael note: But clearly you now get different results depending on where you search from (i.e. Chicago as versus New York) or where you adjust your search location to reflect (i.e search in Chicago but want results from New York for a planned trip.)
Michael note: If you did not know, Google combined local results and organic results a few months back. You can tell a local result with the teardrop and letter ranking, called the 7 or ‘O’ pack. (Note: I just broke that pack with some shrew local tactics for a local professional who is now on page 1 and 2 of Google!) Local results take precedence because Google decided to target that market as a new revenue base – witness the low cost ‘tag’ at $25.00 per month. Well my client looked at tags, but I gave the client a better way. They broke the pack without paying the $300.00 per year fee.
Hmmm, let’s take a second and do some math here. $300.00 times what? 10 years = $3,000.00 Times 20 years = $6,000.00. That’s some serious change all the benefit of some good SEO and a time commitment!
Google also changed the eye tracking patterns to their advantage for universal search which is not relegated to a particular area. (Michael Note: The left sidebar on search results did not belong to Google prior.) Marshall goes on with some deep analytics that I personally think are above our crowd level.
My main concern, as always, has been an ever increasing amount of unique visitors, top rankings on Google page #1 as well as the melody of the “You Have Mail” alert as well as the jingle of the cash register bell. But what do I know? Not much according to some of you….. a great deal to those in the know!
