If you are still using the LinkedIn default background image with the blue background with its lines and circles depicting a network, that’s so bad. I firmly believe you’re missing an opportunity to brand yourself and/or to extend your company’s brand from your Website while increasing your visibility.
Most people learn through visualization; they focus on pictures rather than text. It is estimated that between 65-75% of all adults are visual learners. Why? Our eyes are naturally drawn to pictures. It’s proven that image and video results on a Google search get more clicks than text results only.
If your profile looks like the sample above, you are not utilizing the space afforded you. It’s like getting a free newspaper ad or a billboard on the highway and keeping it blank.
Take advantage of the opportunity to stand out from the crowd and from your competitors. Send visitors a visual message which builds trust and credibility.
Make a brief benefit statement or apply a tag line. Take the opportunity to tell your visitors (and connections) what makes you different and unique. What benefit will they gain in connecting with you and starting a conversation?
The recently introduced LinkedIn layout moved your profile picture from the center to the left. This provides room on the right to conveniently add a logo and/or contact information such as Website, email address and/or phone.
Background images must be in a file type such as GIF, JPG or PNG not to exceed 8MB. The recommended dimensions are 1584 (w) x 396 (h) pixels for high resolution. Note: You can crop, straighten, filter and adjust (reposition) an image you upload; but if you follow the recommended dimensions, the image will fit perfectly.
Once your new background image is ready:
- sign in to LinkedIn
- click on the “Me” icon on the top navigation bar
- go to “View profile”
- click on the pencil (edit) icon under the current banner and to the right of your picture
- again click on the pencil icon on your existing background image
- click on “Change photo”
- locate and open the new background image
- click on “Apply”
- click on “Save”
You must make your changes from a desktop or laptop, not from a mobile device. And remember to (per LinkedIn’s user agreement that you accepted) not: “Violate the intellectual property rights of others, including copyrights, patents, trademarks, trade secrets, or other proprietary rights.”
